Piano Chiuso Riserva
Near Manduria, a historic residence is surrounded by ancient Primitivo bush-trained vineyards over 70 years old, enclosed by a dry stone wall. In France, some of the finest vineyards are enclosed by walls or low walls; in the past, Cistercian monks would divide or enclose certain vineyard parcels with low walls when, literally tasting the soil, they perceived changes in its mineral composition. The fruit from these “closed” vineyards, or “Clos,” would therefore be of different quality and the ultimate expression of that micro-soil. Reviving this tradition, Felice Mergé is the promoter and executor of the “closed vineyard” project, highlighting a very small area through the production of a new wine: the Primitivo di Manduria Riserva “Piano Chiuso,” the ultimate expression of a terroir whose origins are still little known.
