Just a short distance from the Gulf of Taranto, set among some of the highest sand dunes in Europe and ancient olive groves, the Maruggio Estate encompasses approximately 10 hectares of vineyards overlooking the sea. This corner of Puglia holds centuries of history: once land of the Templars and the Knights of Malta, today it is an agricultural microcosm where winemaking tradition meets the wild, natural beauty of the coastal landscape. Here, the vine grows between sand and sirocco winds, absorbing the Mediterranean character that makes its fruit truly distinctive.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The vineyards of Maruggio draw their strength from sandy, mineral-rich soils that lend freshness and personality to the wines. The leading variety is Primitivo, which in this area expresses a particularly intense, maritime profile, thanks to the proximity to the sea and the constant breezes that dry and protect the clusters. Alongside Primitivo, other native Apulian grape varieties are cultivated, with selected plantings of Negroamaro and small parcels dedicated to complementary varieties that enhance aromatic complexity. The direct influence of the coast makes these vineyards truly unique within the regional landscape, yielding grapes with balanced ripening and silky tannins.

Winemaking philosophy

At the Maruggio Estate, production is an exercise in balance between nature and farming tradition. Sandy soils and proximity to the sea require attentive viticulture: targeted pruning, low yields, and hand harvesting to select only the finest grapes. In the cellar, the use of modern technologies such as temperature-controlled fermentations and carefully calibrated ageing allows the natural freshness of the wines to be preserved while enhancing structure and depth. It is here that wines are born which tell the story of coastal Puglia—elegant, savoury, and deeply rooted in their land.
